Description: This article covers how to determine if injected PIN encryption keys or point-to-point encryption keys are present on the Verifone MX device.
Note: The steps below only confirm an encryption key is present, not that it is valid. Only the Key Injection Facility (KIF) can validate a PIN Encryption Key. Shift4 agents can only validate if a Shift4 Point to Point Encryption (P2PE) Key is valid.
Note: If utilizing the hardware device for Signature Capture ONLY, no Keys may be present on the device.
To begin you will need to reboot your device and enter the System Menu.

[Option 1] Put the terminal into System Mode by holding the 1, 5, and 9 buttons. [Option 2] Put the terminal into System Mode by using a straightened paperclip to press the reassessed reset button on the bottom side of the terminal near the serial number stickers. [Result] The message “Signal 15 caught” displays, followed by a password prompt. You will need to enter the password to configure the device. The default password is 166831, but it may have been changed and is often changed to 166832. Enter the password and then select Enter.

You will now be on the System Mode main menu.
Validate the Debit Encryption Key
- In the menu, click the Security tab.
- Click the Key Status tab.
- Click the DUKPT tab.
- The DUKPT key should be displayed in slot 0.
Validate the P2PE Encryption Key
- In the menu, click the Security tab.
- Click the Key Status tab.
- Click the ADE tab.
- The Shift4 P2PE key should be displayed in slot 0.
