Identify MICROS & Simphony Workstation Types

Description:  This guide helps you identify the workstation type(s) used in a customer's Micros and Simphony environment. This information is utilized in many different aspects of setup and troubleshooting when dealing with Micros and Simphony. 

For MICROS, the majority of the troubleshooting depends on the workstation type the customer is using. This is mainly due to the various operating systems that are supported across the many terminal types. There are two client types that are supported by MICROS, the Win32 type or the WinCE type.

The different types of workstations are very important as the MICROS Client Application Loader (CAL) application is used to install and transfer the files to the workstations, and they may not copy to the correct workstation if the client type is not properly identified during file setup.

• The Win32/64 types are running a full Windows OS and have regular operating system features, these client types are grouped within the "Win32" directory for CAL.
• The WinCE types are running a Windows CE (Embedded Compact). These are not a full Windows OS and typically have their own file directory within MICROS for bridging compatibility (e.g., WS4, WS5, KW270, or MTablet)

To help narrow down what type of workstation the merchant is using, we’ll need to know the following:

1. Are the cards swiped vertically or horizontally?
2. What length is the swiper/MSR? As long as the screen or short?
3. Is this a workstation or tablet?
   • If a workstation, is there a power light?
     1. If not, is the screen black & white or in color?
        • If black & white, this is a WS3.
        • If in color, this could be an Ultra, Eclipse, or 2010 Workstation.
     2. If yes, what shape and color is the power light?
        • If square, this could be a WS4, or WS4 LX. 
        • If a circle, this could be a Keyboard Workstation, WS5, WS5A, 2015 Workstation, WS6, or Compact Workstation 310.
   • If a tablet, is the MICROS branding on the front or the back of the tablet?
     1. If on the front, is there a barcode scanner?
        • If yes, this is a MTablet 700-Series.
        • If not, this is a MTablet R-Series 
     2. If on the back, this is a MTablet E-Series.
